OVERVIEW

About Agricultural Power Products

Agricultural pump sets work on some of the hardest supplies an electric motor sees: wide voltage swings, frequent outages, phase loss and long cable runs out to the field. A properly selected starter protects the motor through all of this and keeps irrigation running.

Microtech supplies Lauritz & Knudsen agricultural starters, including the MK1 and MK2 series used on farm pumps across India for decades. Direct-on-line starters cover smaller pumps and star-delta starters reduce the starting current of larger ones; both use a wide-band coil that holds in across roughly 200–400 V, so the starter does not chatter or drop out on a weak rural feeder. The enclosure is built to keep out dust, humidity and insects.

For three-phase pumps, the starter can be paired with a single-phasing protection relay that trips on phase loss, unbalance or reversal, and with a dry-run protection device for borewells. We help farmers, dealers and contractors pick the starter and overload range from the motor rating.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Agricultural Power Products — FAQs

Should I use a DOL or star-delta starter on my pump?

Small pumps are normally started direct-on-line. Larger motors draw a heavy current at start, so a star-delta starter is used to reduce it — L&K MK DOL starters go up to 7.5 HP and star-delta up to 15 HP. Check the motor nameplate and your electricity supplier's rules on starting current.

Why does my pump motor burn out on a rural feeder?

The usual causes are single phasing, very low voltage and dry running. A starter with a correctly set overload relay, together with a single-phasing protection relay and dry-run protection, guards against all three.

How do I choose the overload relay range?

Set it to the full-load current on the motor nameplate, and pick the relay range so that this current falls within the adjustable band. If you share the HP and current, we will recommend the correct starter and relay.
