OVERVIEW

About 3-Phase Industrial Motors

The three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor is the standard prime mover in industry: a wound stator, a rotor of short-circuited bars, and no brushes or slip rings to maintain. It drives pumps, fans, compressors and most process machinery, either direct on line, through a star-delta or soft starter, or from a VFD.

Microtech supplies low-voltage (LT) induction motors from Crompton Greaves (CG Power), Havells, ABB and Siemens in IE2 high-efficiency and IE3 premium-efficiency classes, rated to IS 12615 and IEC 60034-30-1. Mountings include foot, flange and foot-cum-flange, with frame dimensions to IS 1231 and IS 2223 so a replacement motor matches the existing base or flange. Inverter-duty versions are available for VFD-fed applications.

We match the motor to the drive or starter it will run on — checking pole count, frame, insulation and cooling at reduced speed — so the motor and its control gear are specified together rather than bought separately and matched on site.

COMMON QUESTIONS

3-Phase Industrial Motors — FAQs

Should I buy an IE2 or IE3 motor?

IE3 motors have lower losses than IE2 motors of the same rating, so they cost less to run. For motors that run long hours, the energy saving usually justifies the higher price. For motors that run only occasionally, IE2 can be enough.

Can any induction motor be run on a VFD?

Most modern motors can, but at low speed a self-cooled motor loses cooling, and long cables can stress the winding insulation. For heavy VFD duty we recommend an inverter-duty motor or a forced-cooling fan, and an output filter on long cable runs.

Will a new motor fit my existing base or flange?

If the frame size and mounting type match, yes — IS 1231 and IS 2223 fix the mounting dimensions for each frame. Send us the old motor's nameplate and we will confirm the matching frame.

Which motor brands do you supply?

Crompton Greaves (CG Power), Havells, ABB and Siemens. We can quote within a single brand if your plant has standardised on one.
